    Program Overview

The American Sign Language & Interpreting Program’s mission is to enable students to develop communication skills to be used with persons who are deaf; and to prepare students for careers working with persons who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The American Sign Language and Interpreting Program offers multiple options for students who wish to learn American Sign Language (ASL) and/or enter a profession that works with persons who are deaf or hard of hearing. The program prepares students with the academic and communication skills that will help them be successful in a variety of professions and careers.

This degree is a transfer degree that prepares students for further education leading to a career in which they will work with clients who are deaf and hard of hearing. Students will be able to complete all of the Texas core curriculum as well as take basic ASL and Deaf Culture courses at Del Mar and can continue with advanced language study at Del Mar either while completing their Associate’s degree or while working on their Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees.

This certificate program does not provide any coursework in preparation to become an interpreter.  If you are interested in becoming an American Sign Language/English interpreter, please see http://delmar.edu/Interpreter_Preparation.aspx
