SGA President Wins Poetry Competition While Another Officer Becomes Region VI Secretary

Del Mar College Student Government Association (SGA) leaders attended the 2014 Texas Junior College Student Government Association (TJCSGA) convention, “Rise Up and Make It Happen,” held in Austin April 9- TJCSGA) 13. The association encompasses 72 community and junior colleges from across Texas and is the only student-maintained organization in the state that works to promote the cause of community college students at local, regional, state and national levels.

Del Mar College SGA members competed in several competitions since the College’s last submission to these events in 1996. DMC projects were selected among several colleges to represent Region VI in the Chapter of the Year and Advisor of the Year categories. Del Mar College’s SGA also participated in the Poetry Contest, Event of the Year and Community Service Project of the Year. 

Among awards and titles brought home from the conference are Denise Mugabe, SGA president at DMC, winning first place in the poetry contest; Del Mar SGA selected as runner-up for Chapter of the Year; Beverly Cage, DMC Director of Student Leadership and Campus Life and SGA advisor, named as runner-up for Advisor of the Year as well as the 2014-2015 Region VI advisor; and DMC student and SGA officer Payton Jones selected as the new TJCSGA Region VI Secretary.
