For the young ladies contending for the crown during the 53rd annual Feria de las Flores Scholarship Pageant on Saturday, July 28, winning the competition gives one lucky competitor rights to be called “queen” for the next year. She’ll also receive scholarship funds for college.

Seeing the competition live is also an exciting time for family and friends who can’t attend the event.

Del Mar College’s Del Mar TV will air the event live from Richardson Performance Hall beginning at 7 p.m. on Channel 19 on both Time Warner Cable and Grande Cable.  The College will also broadcast the pageant live on the Web beginning 15 minutes before the 7 p.m. competition starts. Individuals can view the event by going to www.delmar.edu/webcasts.aspx.

For individuals who miss the live television airing, rebroadcast times and dates on Time Warner Cable and Grande Cable on Digital Channel 19 will be

• Friday, Aug. 10 and 24, at 8 p.m.

• Saturday, Aug. 11 and 18, at 9 p.m.

• Sunday, Aug. 12 and 19, at 9 p.m.

• Tuesday, Aug. 14 and 21, at 2 p.m.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council No. 1 has sponsored the pageant since 1959 with more than $2 million in scholarships awarded to Coastal Bend students since 1970. Each contestant represents a Mexican state, wears a colorful dress that symbolizes that region and performs a dance routine of the state's song. Interviews were conducted earlier in the week.
