Divisional Mission Statement

 

Mission: The eight departments comprising the Division of Arts and Sciences at Del Mar College are committed to providing an environment of academic excellence, aesthetic appreciation, and an understanding and awareness of the natural and social worlds. Through expertise and continuing professional growth, scholarship, innovative teaching, advising and mentoring, and service to the College, the faculty and leadership of the Division actively contribute to the development of articulate, reflective, and knowledgeable graduates.

Goals: The Division of Arts and Sciences will:                 

  • Maintain academic excellence by supporting the recruitment and retention of qualified and innovative faculty and staff;


  • Pursue divisional excellence through systematic program review, authentic assessment practices, and effective long-range planning;


  • Whenever appropriate, collaborate with area schools and school districts, businesses, and public and private agencies for the improvement of education within the community;


  • Safeguard accessibility and equity for all students, faculty, and staff;


  • Ensure a rigorous and challenging curriculum that prepares graduates and transfer students for success at other institutions of higher education;


  • Encourage the success of less well-prepared students through effective advising, mentoring, and innovative developmental courses;


  • Recognize and meet the educational needs of Del Mar College students through varied and flexible course offerings, and provision of technology and facilities that support learning;


  • Foster an eclectic cultural environment that values the disparate aesthetics of art, poetry, drama, music, literature, nature, public discussion, and dance;


  • Assist students in developing the skills and positive attitudes necessary to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle; and


  • Value and promote the intellectual spirit of scientific, mathematic, artistic, and philosophical inquiry.
