Information for International Students

Thank you for your interest in Del Mar College. The following information should be used to facilitate your application process.

Del Mar College

  • About 80 percent of Del Mar students come from Corpus Christi and the surrounding area. The rest come from other areas in Texas, 40 other states, plus about 60 different countries.
  • College programs are accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award certificates of achievement and associate degrees.
  • Classroom facilities are specially designed to provide a successful educational environment.
  • Faculty and staff offer a wealth of credentials and expertise.
  • Costs are among the lowest available in the state.

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

  • The ESOL Program offers a wide range of ESOL courses.
  • The ESOL teachers and staff use tutorials and computer-assisted instruction, as well as audio and video tapes, to help individuals improve their English skills.
  • International students can receive individual and group assistance in the ESOL Lab.
  • The ESOL Lab offers students the opportunity to learn and improve their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

Local Arrangements

The College does not provide campus housing. Students are responsible for making their own arrangements for accommodations and transportation.

Admission Documents

All admission documents should be submitted to the Office of Admissions and Registrar at least one month prior to registration. These documents include:

  • Del Mar College application for admission.
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score report indicating a score of at least 550. The ESOL Program does not require the TOEFL.
  • Scores from placement exam (ACT, SAT, ASSET, TASP, and/or CELT).
  • Documents from the student's home country verifying high school and/or college work. All documents should be transcribed into English.
  • Notarized financial statement which indicates the student will be self-supporting during his/ her stay in the U.S.

Transfer Students

International students transferring from another U.S. college or university must also transfer their student visa and admission documents from that institution and notify Del Mar College of the transfer.

Form I-20

A form I-20 will be provided to the applicant upon submission of all above-mentioned documents.

Enrollment

Once admitted to Del Mar College, international students with an F-1 or student visa must enroll in and maintain a full course load of at least 12 semester hours. Students must also maintain at least a 2.0 GPA (grade point average). Failure to comply with full-time status and/or the minimum GPA will jeopardize student visa status. Enrollment is verified by a College official each semester.

TASP Requirements

The Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) is a program of testing, advisement, and remediation mandated by the Texas Legislature. TASP requires that all students in this program of study take the TASP test prior to registration. International students must also comply with requirements of the TASP.
