History of Del Mar College
History: A comprehensive community college in Corpus Christi, Texas, founded in 1935.
Enrollment: Approximately 22,000 credit and noncredit students each year. Fall semester 2008 credit enrollment is 11,310.
Student Body: 40.7% men and 59.3% women; 57.7% Hispanic, 32.1% White, non-Hispanic, 3.0% African American, 5.0% other (includes Asian, Native American, unknown, and international). Over 95% come from Corpus Christi and the surrounding area, the rest from other areas in Texas, 37 other U.S. states and territories, and 34 other countries.
Serving the Hispanic Community: Ranked among the nation's top 3% of community colleges granting associate degrees to Hispanic students.
Tuition and fees per semester: about $861 for district residents. (Out-of-district fees will be lowered to $50 beginning Fall 2009.)
Financial Aid: Over $16 million in assistance awarded annually in the form of scholarships, grants, loans, student assistants, and work-study.
Faculty: 314 full-time with 90% holding a master's degree or higher; a student/faculty ratio of 18:1.
Degree Programs: Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees in over 50 university transfer majors; Associate in Applied Science degrees, Enhanced Skills Certificates, Certificates of Achievement and Marketable Skills Awards in more than 140 occupational fields (multiple awards are offered in some fields).
Classes: Each semester, over 1,700 credit classes are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays and on Saturdays. Approximately another 250 noncredit classes are offered each quarter.
Flexible Scheduling: The College offers special scheduling options including Rapid Track, weekend, videoconferencing, short-semester, off-campus, and online courses.
Library Collection: 189,259 volumes, 29,900 E-book titles, 772 current periodicals (2,195 periodicals total), 33,000 online serial and other resource titles, and 340 Internet-accessible computers.
Cultural Opportunities: A strong cultural influence in the community, Del Mar College frequently presents musical concerts, dramatic presentations, art exhibits, dance programs, lectures, and workshops throughout the year at little or no charge.
Athletics: Over 2,000 students each year participate in intramural sports, including flag football, bowling, volleyball, basketball, frisbee, racquetball, and soccer.
Special Educational Programs: Honors Program for academically-talented students; Collegiate High School, Dual Credit and Early Admissions programs allow high school students to enroll for college-level courses while completing high school graduation requirements; Senior Citizens Education Program for those 55 and older.
Academic Success: According to the most recent statewide data available, an average of over 89 percent of Del Mar College graduates were either employed and/or attending college within the one year of graduation, compared to 88 percent statewide. Four-year institutions in the state report that Del Mar transfer students do as well as, or better than, students who started at those institutions as freshmen.
Occupational Success: The most recent average passing rate for Del Mar College graduates is nearly 95% in occupational programs that require licensing for employment.
Accreditation: Del Mar College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097, 404-679-4500) to award Certificates of Achievement and Associate degrees.
Capital Investment: Over $156 million. Two campuses and one campus annex; 47 buildings with 916 well-furnished classrooms and laboratories.
