    Faculty Development for Teaching Online

    The following options for faculty development for online teaching have been approved by the E- Learning and Distance Learning Committee. These options are designed to meet SACSCOC and THECB requirements that faculty who teach distance education courses have appropriate training.

    Below are the courses for certification to teach online:

    Phase 1

    Title of course: Getting Started with Canvas 

    Description of course:  This course has been designed to familiarize you with the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) and its main features. It will also provide an overview to help you begin developing your own Canvas course.

    Type of course:  Self-Paced

    Location of course:  Online through Canvas

    Length of course:  45 mins - 2 hours

    Prerequisite(s):  None

    Dates Offered:  Year round

    Phase 2

    Title of course: Designing and Teaching Online 

    Description of course: This course helps you apply adult learning theory in a classroom setting with resources to enhance participation and engagement.

    Type of course:  Online

    Location of course:  Online through Canvas

    Length of course:  5 weeks

    Prerequisite(s):  Getting Started with Canvas Course

    Dates Offered:  Begins: September 6, 2016 / Ends: October 8, 2016

    Phase 3

    Title of course: Canvas LMS

    Description of course: This course is designed to help instructor deliver content based on pedagogy theory with implementation of learner centered resources using Canvas tips and tools.

    Prerequisite(s):  Getting Started with Canvas Course and Designing and Teaching Online

    Dates Offered:  Begins: October 17, 2016 / Ends: November 19, 2016

    Phase 4

    Title of course: Course Development for Online, Hybrid and Web Enhanced Classes

    Description of course: This course offers the learner ideas to implement strategies which include tips with creating a rubric, discussion boards, and writing outcomes. Topics include: Universal Design, Student Activities for Engagement, Rubric Development and Course Outcomes

    Length of course:  5 weeks

    Title of course: Self-Paced Enhanced Courses

    Description of course: These courses include: Copyright/Fair Use, Accessibility, Panopto, Proctoring Exam and Respondus Lockdown and Monitor and Dual Credit

    Length of course:  5 weeks

    Phase 6

    Title of course: Instructional Technology Tools 

    Description of course: This course is geared toward Microsoft Digital Literacy, Google for Education Training, Badges, Canvas Community, Cengage, Math Lab and Atomic Learning

    Canvas Course Information 

    Del Mar College credit courses will be automatically populated in Canvas. You do not have to request your course to be created.  Students will also be imported automatically. 

    Be sure that you are assigned to the course that you’re teaching in Colleague or you will not see it in Canvas.

    You may request a development shell if you’ve completed training. These courses are never available to students. Instructors can copy these courses into their live courses.
