Major Field

With the exception of the Music and the Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) degree programs, each major requires completion of the Core Curriculum (42-43 semester hours, see Core Curriculum section of this catalog for information) and enough additional hours in the major field to total 62 semester hours. Courses in the major field for the Associate in Arts and the Associate in Science degrees are any courses normally applicable to a baccalaureate degree in a major of the same or equivalent area at an accredited senior institution. These courses must also satisfy criteria 2 and 3 of the education plan for the Associate in Arts degree or must satisfy criteria 2-5 of the education plan for the Associate in Science degree (see Requirements for Associate in Arts and Associate in Science Degrees section).

Courses shown in the Suggested Transfer Plan areas of the instructional-division sections of this catalog fulfill all requirements for the indicated majors. However, because of various transfer requirements from senior institutions, other combinations of core and major-field courses may also satisfy the requirements for Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees. A student should obtain an approved education plan from the academic advisor for the major as soon as possible in the college career.

The Rapid Track Associate Degree

Rapid Track is a method of completing the courses required for the Associate in Arts (AA) degree within one year. The Rapid Track Associate Degree option is geared toward highly-motivated students who can devote time to an accelerated program of study.

To complete the Rapid Track Associate in Arts Degree in one year, students enroll in seven consecutive terms - Fall I and II, Spring I and II, Maymester and Summer I and II. For Rapid Track, the traditional 16-week semester term is divided into two six-week terms. Fall I and II are offered between August and December and Spring I and II are offered between January and May. Most classes meet four times a week, Monday through Thursday.

The Rapid Track student enrolls in

Rapid Track courses require more study because students have a shorter time period in which to complete the course. Students are advised not to hold a job while enrolled in the Rapid Track Associate Degree option.

Rapid Track courses transfer to most four-year colleges and universities and can be applied to any Del Mar College degree plan. If finishing the Associate degree in one year is not the goal, a student can mix Rapid Track courses with regular 16-week courses.

Articulation agreements or 2+2 plans exist with one or more accredited Texas universities. Contact the instructional deans for more information.
