Mission

The GED Program's mission is to provide remedial education to those students ineligible or unprepared to enter college credit courses and to give them the basic academic, language, and personal skills needed for future academic and vocational success. The program accomplishes its purpose by offering GED test preparation classes to help students pass the General Educational Development (GED) test.

Program Design
Through small group instruction and one-to-one tutoring, deficiencies in writing, math, or reading are removed under the guidance of an instructor. Computer technology is integrated with curricula to provide computer literacy skills. Workplace skills are also integrated with curricula to help prepare students for successful employment. Progression through the program is self-paced. Once GED students can demonstrate the required proficiencies in Social Studies, Science, Literature and the Arts: Writing, Literature and the Arts: Reading and Mathematics they are referred for testing. Instruction is planned to correspond to the sixth through twelfth grade levels of public education.

Class Offerings

Classes are offered Monday through Thursday in the morning and evening based on demand. Admission is open to anyone 17 years of age or older. Prior to registration, new students must complete a four-day orientation. Tuition waivers are available to anyone who cannot pay tuition. The GED (General Educational Development) certificate is accepted as equivalent to a high school diploma. The GED Program at Del Mar College helps prepare students to take and pass the GED test. Presently, there are five different subtests students must take to get their GED. The five subtests are Social Studies, Science, Literature and the Arts: Writing, Literature and the Arts: Reading and Mathematics. Classes are offered in all areas but special emphasis is placed on reading, writing, and mathematics. The program is designed not only to help students pass their GED test but also to help prepare them for college after they have received their GED.
