American Sign Language
SLGN1091. For those interested in learning to communicate via sign language. This
course provides an introduction to the basic skills in production and comprehension of American Sign
Language.
Basic Accounting
ACNT 1001. This 36 hour course will teach you proper accounting systems by becoming familiar with accounting terminology, basic operating systems, financial statements, and other introductory concepts. Textbook required.
Bank Teller Training
BNKG 1004. This 30-hour course deals with bank teller procedures. Areas of major emphasis are public relations for bank employees, handling of money, check cashing procedures, time deposits, and selling bank services.
Bartending
RSTO 1001. This course focuses on the management phase of the bar business. Topics covered are purchasing, inventory controls, liquor laws, staffing, and mixology. All demonstrations utilize nonalcoholic mixes. Textbook required
Citizen Reporting
ETWR 1043. This media adventure course will help explore the strangely powerful world of the mass media from a very critical perspective. You will closely analyze mass media messages, learn about the behind-the-scene culture that produces those messages, and collaborate with your classmates on a media production of your own.
Clown School
ARTV 1091. Learn make-up, magic, balloon animals, skits, juggling and how to make people laugh. Book to be purchased from instructor.
Drawing I
ARTC 1091. Students will explore the elements of design through exercises and studies. A variety of media will be used to learn or improve drawing skills, with attention to the workings of the creative process. Supplies required.
Drawing II
ARTC 1091. An intermediate course for those who have already had beginning instruction in drawing. Emphasis will be on compositional and design issues, developing content, exploration of mark-making, with attention to other drawing issues set in the context of the creative process. Supplies required
Floral Design
FMKT 1091. Learn the fundamentals of successful floral arranging including care of cut flowers and foliages, basic design techniques, tips for handling roses, and flower identification. Put it all together in selected project. Supplies and project cost may be as much as $25 per class depending on project. Students may consider sharing supply cost with other students.
Advanced Floral Design
FMKT 2031. Learn advanced floral design techniques such as building armatures, topiary, corsages, boutannieres, and more. Supplies and project cost may be as much as $25 per class depending on project. Students may consider sharing supply cost with other students.
Grant Writing
ETWR 1000. This course details the ten components of a typical grant proposal to a foundation. Learn about foundation research, how to effectively write the cover letter, the importance of needs assessments, and evaluations. Most of the techniques you will learn can be applied to state and federal grant applications.
National Electric Code
ELPT 1025. This 48-hour course is designed to help a student become familiar with the National Electric Code. Requirements specified by the National Electric Code as minimum requirements for an approved electrical installation. Examination of all aspects of electrical installation from the standpoint of safety for personnel and equipment.
National Electric Code Calculations
ELPT 1015. This 48-hour course is designed to help a student become familiar with computations for figuring load requirements for residences and businesses.
Orchestra for Community
MUSP 1091. A chamber orchestra combining Del Mar College students and community members. The orchestra performs a wide range of repertoire from Baroque to Contemporary. Some previous experience is required. Contact the Director before registering (698-1223).
Photography, Darkroom Techniques
PHTC 1002. Learn how to process black and white film, print photographs, make
contact sheets, vary contrast, burning and dodging, spot prints, and crop photographs in the
enlarger. You supply your own film and paper for this lab course and the College supplies the
chemicals and darkroom equipment.
Photography-Digital
PHTC 1091. This course will provide a better understanding of your digital camera controls and functions. Explore items such as file formats, digital exposure, ISO settings, white balance, histogram, composition and panoramic mode. Shooting black and white and sepia tone. Students will learn how to get the most out of their scanner and put together a portfolio of the photography that will covered throughout the course. Students will have to provide digital camera, camera's users manual and have access to personal computer/printer at home. This is a hands on course and assignments will be given.
Beginning Sewing
FSHN 1093. Bring your portable sewing machine to class and learn basic/intermediate sewing techniques to help you
sew a simple garment or a set of pillows. Learn the different seams and seam finishes, collars, cuffs and plackets with buttonholes.
Also learn how to set a sleeve. You will study about the variety of fabrics, different sewing stitches, and the proper way to measure
yourself for a store bought pattern.
Small Engine Repair
SMER 1041. This 30 hour course teaches you the basic theory, operation, maintenance, and repair of small internal combustion engines.
Substitute Teacher
EDTC 1002. This 15-hour course prepares prospective substitute teachers for employment with area school districts. It will acquaint students with pertinent information such as the substitute teacher's role, management, professionalism, communication skills, etc.
Teacher Aide
EDTC 1094. This 30-hour course provides exposure to the basic elements of functioning effectively as a classroom teacher aide/paraprofessional. Topics related to job assignments, developmental patterns of students, public school system basics and design, classroom management, discipline techniques, etc. Focus on providing assistance with instruction on reading, writing, and math to meet the requirements of "No Child Left Behind."
Pressure Vessel and Industrial Fabrication
WLDG 1055. This course is designed to teach you to read and interpret fabrication drawings and blueprints. You will learn to solve formulas using a calculator and do basic layouts for pressure vessel fabrication. You will be introduced to standard materials, welding symbols and processes, and most frequently used codes and specifications.
Understanding Credit
BNKG1091. This course is designed to untangle the complexities of personal credit by
taking you inside the world of the national Credit Bureaus. Students will receive instructions regarding
how to improve your credit, update your credit score and a revelation of finance secrets that can work to
save you money on insurance, bank and personal loans, automobile loans, mortgage loans and even utilities.
Receive instruction on how to legally correct errors and negative information on your credit report in
order to improve your credit score.
48 Days to the Work that You Love
This is a six week workshop on finding ‘work you love.’ It is designed to be motivational, inspiring, & refreshing; giving you a new outlook to the tedium that is work. Some of the lessons included are: The Challenge of Change, The Power of Goals, Creative Job Search Strategy, & Negotiating Salaries. Students signing up for this course are required to purchase the seminar participant package from the instructor for $199. The package will include a DVD, A hardback book with a workbook, a daily devotional & 2 CD’s.
