Job Preparation Course Descriptions
Accident Prevention and Loss Control
This course will cover the roles and responsibilities of a construction supervisor in accident prevention and loss control.
Advanced Floral Design
Learn advanced floral design techniques such as building armatures, topiary, corsages, boutonnieres, and more. Supplies and project cost may be as much as $25 per class depending on project. Students may consider sharing supply cost with other students.
Bank Teller Training
This course deals with bank teller procedures. Areas of major emphasis are public relations for bank employees, handling of money, check cashing procedures, time deposits, and selling bank services.
Bartending
This course focuses on the management phase of the bar business. Topics covered are purchasing, inventory controls, liquor laws, staffing, and mixology. All demonstrations utilize nonalcoholic mixes. Textbook may be required
Basic Mediator Training
Topics include history of mediation, Alternative Dispute Resolution legislation in Texas, conflict resolution theory, mediation theory and practice, mediation process and techniques, self-awareness and ethics.
Basic Women’s Tailoring
An introduction to tailoring women’s apparel including instruction in pattern alterations and fitting and alteration procedures. Fundamentals of sewing machine operations, fabric preparation and cutting plus machine and hand sewing techniques.
Beginning Sewing
Bring your portable sewing machine to class and learn basic/intermediate sewing techniques to help you sew a simple garment or a set of pillows. Learn the different seams and seam finishes, collars, cuffs and plackets with buttonholes. Also learn how to set a sleeve. You will study about the variety of fabrics, different sewing stitches, and the proper way to measure yourself for a store bought pattern.
Clown School
Learn make-up, magic, balloon animals, skits, juggling and how to make people laugh. There will be a book to be purchased from instructor. Seasonal class.
Contract Documents & Construction Law
This course will provide information about contract documents & construction law to help supervisors recognize the roles & responsibilities of all contracted parties, to develop an understanding of how contract documents can be helpful to solve problems & resolve conflicts, & to develop positive relationships between all parties in the construction process.
Floral Design
Learn the fundamentals of successful floral arranging including care of cut flowers and foliages, basic design techniques, tips for handling roses, and flower identification. Put it all together in selected project. Supplies and project cost may be as much as $25 per class depending on project. Students may consider sharing supply cost with other students.
Fundamentals of Electricity I
An introduction to basic direct current (DC) theory including electron theory and direct current applications.
Fundamentals of Electricity II
Introduces alternating current (AC). Includes AC voltage, frequency, mechanical and electrical degrees, waveforms, resistors, capacitors, and inductors.
Managing the Project – The Supervisor’s Role
This construction training course is intended to assist supervisors in understanding the relationship between the roles and responsibilities of project managers and project supervisors.
National Electric Code
This course is designed to help a student become familiar with the National Electric Code. Requirements specified by the National Electric Code as minimum requirements for an approved electrical installation. It will also cover code, calculations, & exam preparation.
Orchestra for Community
This course is a chamber orchestra combining Del Mar College students and community members. The orchestra performs a wide range of repertoire from Baroque to Contemporary. Some previous experience is required. Contact the Director before registering (698-1223).
Personal Fitness Training
Get all the information you need to become a CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER. This challenging course is taught over a five week period with the National Exam held on the sixth week. Course includes 15 hours of “hands on“ practical training that prepares you to actually work with clients one on one. Lectures include: anatomy, exercise physiology, nutrition, and health screening.
Photography-Digital
This course will provide a better understanding of your digital camera controls and functions. Explore items such as file formats, digital exposure, ISO settings, white balance, histogram, composition and panoramic mode, shooting black and white and sepia tone. Students will learn how to get the most out of their scanner and put together a portfolio of the photography that will covered throughout the course. Students will have to provide digital camera, camera's user’s manual and have access to personal computer/printer at home. This is a hands on course and assignments will be given.
Photography II - Digital
Understand the more advance along with basic functions of the digital single lens reflex camera and photographic techniques for better photography. Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) or Point and Shoot (PS) type cameras that offer Aperture control or Manual control. This class will take you from skills attained in the beginner class to a more advanced photographer understanding difficult photographic situations, basic lighting, and basic digital darkroom. Requirements: A digital single lens reflex camera with user manuals, basic computer skills, internet access, e-mail, and 5-6 hours time for photography assignments.
Planning & Scheduling
This course will help construction supervisors understand the important role that planning & scheduling plays in the successful completion of a construction project.
Pressure Vessel and Industrial Fabrication
This course is designed to teach you to read and interpret fabrication drawings and blueprints. You will learn to solve formulas using a calculator and do basic layouts for pressure vessel fabrication. You will be introduced to standard materials, welding symbols and processes, and most frequently used codes and specifications.
Problem Solving & Decision Making
This course will help construction supervisors identify problems & how they occur & learn techniques for solving them in the construction industry. Supervisors will learn how to use the decision making process & the important considerations to take into account.
Small Engine Repair
This course teaches you the basic theory, operation, maintenance, and repair of small internal combustion engines.
Substitute Teacher
This 15-hour course prepares prospective substitute teachers for employment with area school districts. It will acquaint students with pertinent information such as the substitute teacher's role, management, professionalism, communication skills, etc.
Teacher Aide
This course provides exposure to the basic elements of functioning effectively as a classroom teacher aide/paraprofessional. Topics related to job assignments, developmental patterns of students, public school system basics and design, classroom management, discipline techniques, etc. Focus on providing assistance with instruction on reading, writing, and math.
Understanding Credit
This course is designed to untangle the complexities of personal credit by taking you inside the world of the national Credit Bureaus. Students will receive instructions regarding how to improve your credit, update your credit score and a revelation of finance secrets that can work to save you money on insurance, bank and personal loans, automobile loans, mortgage loans and even utilities. Receive instruction on how to legally correct errors and negative information on your credit report in order to improve your credit score.
Tailoring
Intermediate level class focusing on application of tailoring skills and finishing techniques on selected patterns.
Understanding And Managing Project Costs
This construction training course covers understanding how project estimates are compiled, how to compare actual project costs with those estimated, and how to control costs to meet the estimate.
