Distance learning is learning that is independent of time and place, meaning that students taking courses via distance will not have to come to campus to take courses. Most courses are delivered online using computers connected to the Internet. However, distance courses can also be taken using television (telecourses) or interactive television. Here is a brief overview of distance learning delivery methods:
Online:
Online, sometimes known as Web-based or Internet-based courses, are available
by logging in to Web-based classrooms using a user name and password assigned
at the beginning of the semester. Students taking online classes need to have
a regular and stable connection to the Internet. This can be from a home computer,
using one of the many computers available at Del Mar College, a municipal
library, high schools, the workplace, or other places.
Television:
Televised instruction is offered over Time Warner and Grande (cable channel
19) in the Corpus Christi area. Selected courses are also broadcast over the local PBS station KEDT-TV
(cable channel 9 or channel 16) throughout the Coastal Bend viewing area.
Interactive video:
Videoconferencing, or interactive video courses, are transmitted over the
internet to a campus-based classroom containing a special receiver, camera,
microphone, and television. Students sit in one of these specially equipped
classrooms and watch the instructor lecture. Students can interact directly
with the instructor using the microphone. Using televisions, cameras and microphones
allows all sites to see, hear and interact with one another synchronously.
in real time. Current videoconferencing sites at Del Mar College East Campus
include the White Library, Room 434 and Coles Classroom Building, Room 326.
Off-campus:
Off-campus courses are taught in various communities in the Coastal Bend
area by Del Mar College faculty traveling to the various sites.
Department of Distance Learning
The purpose of the Department of Distance Learning is to maximize student
access to Del Mar College credit and noncredit courses using alternate methods
of instructional delivery. Distance learning courses are designed to offer today's
busy students more flexibility in planning a course load which can be completed
regardless of time and/or location.
