Students taking Web-based courses should have access to a computer system containing at least the following:

  • Computer (in general, the faster the computer the faster the online experience)
    • PC
      • Pentium class or higher (recommended Pentium II or higher),
      • Windows 98 or later
      • Minimum 32 MB RAM memory (64 MB recommended)
    • Macintosh
      • PowerPC with 32 MB RAM or
      • Macintosh with 68040 processor and minimum 32 MB RAM (64 MB recommended)
  • Internet connection (the faster the connection speed, the faster the online experience)
    • Modem ( 28.8 K minimum) or broadband service (recommended)
  • Internet Service Provider (ISP)
  • Internet Browser
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer (4.0 or higher)
    • Netscape (4.0 or higher)
    • Mozilla Firefox
  • Other
    • Sound card and speakers (depending on the course)
    • CD-ROM (depending on the course)
    • Some courses may require special software called plugins. Plugins are free programs downloaded from the Internet and installed on your computer. Typical plugins that may be required include RealPlayer, Flash, Quicktime, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Java, among others. Your instructor will inform you if special software is needed for your course.
