Introduction

The online student will be required to possess the basic skills required to operate a modern computer system. Computer hardware and software have made tremendous advances from the days of 8 inch floppy disks, monochrome screens, and operating systems. Computer systems are much more user-friendly than their counterparts of ten years ago.

However, there is still a basic knowledge level that a student must possess to become an effective online student. Online students should be knowledgeable on such things as:

• Turning on a computer;

• Connecting peripheral devices such as monitor, keyboard, mouse, and printer;

• Using a computer keyboard;

• Connecting to the internet;

• Sending and receiving email;

• Sending files;

• Opening files received as attachments.
