Connie Gutierrez attended Texas Southmost College in Brownsville , Texas before transferring to Texas A&M University-Kingsville (then Texas A&I University) where she earned both bachelor's and master's degrees. She taught at Memorial Middle School in Kingsville and then at Texas A&I University. Gutierrez has taught composition at Del Mar College since 1992. She presently serves as Assistant Chairperson of the English, Philosophy, and Education Department.
