Important course information:
1. The course is six weeks long, and you will need to be active throughout. The course will require that you spend approximately 10-20 hours per week reading assignments, reading discussion posts, writing discussion posts, researching, writing essays, and completing quizzes.
2. You may be required to take a final exam on-campus. If so, you must make arrangements to take the exam at the designated time and date.
3. You may view the course syllabus at http://www.delmar.edu/engl/instruct/scrowson/1301onlinesum.html
4. You must participate in a online lab which will appear as a separate course in WebCT. The labs start the second week of the semester. If your WebCT page does not include the lab by June 2, contact Ms. Deleon at rdeleon@delmar.edu. Failure to participate as required in the Labs will result in a reduction of your English 1301 course grade.
5. Interactivity is a major aspect of this course. Your success in the course depends on your keeping up with the discussion postings and readings. You must post and respond throughout the week, so you will not be able to leave your work for the last minute of the assignment period. Students must provide their own computer and internet service provider. Before signing up for an online course, students should be fluent in computer use including navigating the web, operating email, managing files (saving, uploading, downloading, and installing). Students are responsible for configuring and maintaining their own equipment. Students who are new to using computers and students with minimal computer skills should reconsider taking an online course. Check your skills at http://www.delmar.edu/media/skills.html
6. You will need the following textbooks: Ruggerio, Beyond Feelings 8th edition and Lunsford Easy Writer 3rd edition.
7. When you e-mail me please type 1301 online Student on the subject line so that I will recognize the importance of your message.
8. Since I am not working on campus during the semester break, the best way to contact me is through my email address scrowson@delmar.edu. I will get back to you as soon as possible.
9. This course does not require a face-to-face orientation. You will complete an online course orientation as your first assignment. If you have never taken an online course call the Distance Learning office at 361-698-1312 or (361) 698-1379 to schedule your required WebCT orientation. ) WebCT orientation is also available online at http://www.delmar.edu/webct/ Learn about WebCT at http://www.delmar.edu/media More information about WebCT can also be found at http:www.delmar.edu/media/HOWTOwebct.html PLEASE NOTE THAT WebCt ORIENTATION IS NOT THE SAME AS THE COURSE ORIENTATION.
10. You should receive a letter from Distance Learning containing your User ID and password. The letter will be mailed to your address of record in DMC's Registrar's office. If your information is not up to date, please contact the registrar's office with your current information. Once you receive the User ID and password, if you have any trouble logging on or need help with the WebCT functions, call the Help Desk at 361-698-2330. (If you have taken WebCT courses at Del Mar within the past year, you have the same User ID.)
11. Once you have your User ID and Password, log in and go to English 1301 Composition I on May 27, 2008. You will be given further directions on what to do for your "faceless" orientation. If you log on, and do not see English 1301, chances are you have not been imported yet. If you are not imported into the course by May 30th, please call the Help Desk to find out why. If you have not logged on by May 30, 2007, you may be dropped from the course.
12. If you have any questions, you may contact me at scrowson@delmar.edu or leave a message at 361-698-1432. My office hours for Summer 2008 are tentatively scheduled for MTWThF 9-10:00 a.m. online; on campus by appointment.
