Financial Aid Award
Students' files that are complete by the priority deadline of May 1st, will be processed by July 1st. If all paperwork is not submitted on/or before the deadline, it may take approximately one to two additional months for the file to be ready for processing.
The first step toward the award process is determining the student's need. Factors, such as:
- a student's dependency status
- parental contribution from income and assets
- student's contribution from income and assets
- VA benefits
- Social Security benefits
The next step the Financial Aid Office does is to establish what costs the student will incur for the academic year while in attendance at Del Mar College. After the student's budget is established, the Financial Aid Office will subtract the student's resources, if any, to calculate the financial need.
Example:
| Dependent Student's Budget | $7144 |
| Family Contribution | -700 |
| Financial Need | $6444 |
Once financial need has been established, a financial aid package is developed.
Packaging is the process of combining various types of aid from various sources to meet the financial need of a student. Del Mar College maintains the policy of making awards in the following order:
Priority is given to those students with the greatest financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office, based on the information derived from the SAR.
After the award has been made, an award letter will be mailed to the student. An award letter states the sources and amounts of financial aid being offered to the student to help meet the cost of attendance at Del Mar College. Awards will also be made available online on MyDMC .
Award letters are mailed as early as possible so students will know what type of financial aid to expect for the award year. Students need to accept/reject the awards by checking the response column. sign and return to our office within 14 days or access the Del Mar College website at http://mydmc.delmar.edu and accept your awards online. You will also find specifics concerning disbursements Satisfactory Academic Progress, and other essential information at this website.
The Financial Aid Services must have an accepted award before payment is made.
Students must attend Del Mar College to use their award. Students transferring to another college must reapply at that college.
Financial aid funds are generally paid to the student at the beginning of each registration session and periodically through each semester. The exception is the Federal & Texas Work-Study Programs in which earnings are paid to the student on the 15th of each month.
Del Mar College offers financial assistance in the form of grants, scholarships, employment, and loans through participation in Federal, state, and local financial aid programs. The source and the amount of a student's award will vary greatly depending on their financial aid need as established by the Department of Education.
Priority is given to students with the greatest documented financial need and whose applications were completed by the priority deadlines.
