Executive Summary
Del Mar College’s current Master Facilities Plan was prepared in 1986 with an update to its site plans showing actual construction in 1989. During the past 14 years technology, has been the single most important force that has changed how Del Mar College has performed its mission. Recent actions by the Regents, administration, and faculty clearly state their commitment to continue to enhance the College’s technological assets with the aim of fully integrating the use of the computer and the internet into the daily activities of the faculty and students.
Thus, the conventional facilities master plan would not be suitable for Del Mar College at this time. The conventional master plan estimates future enrollment gains and projects space requirements; this facilities master plan will depend for its projections on the College’s educational plan, technology advances, enrollment trends, distance learning, and possible satellite facilities when the College District expands its boundaries to determine the future of its physical plant.
The Board of Regents has stated their intent to upgrade both the existing buildings and the campuses landscape and graphics. The existing buildings were surveyed both for physical condition and functional obsolescence. The Facilities Planning Committee met to discuss and review its findings, planning considerations, and options for the College’s development. The topics reviewed by the Committee included:
- physical conditions of the building
- use of present facilities
- planning concepts
- vehicular patterns
- pedestrian patterns
- service access to buildings
- emergency access
- projected land use
- landscape systems
- signage and graphics
