Del Mar College BackgroundContinued
The first annex of the College’s Fine Arts Center, which now houses the music department, opened in 1958. The Venetian tile mosaic mural adorning the annex was the largest of its genre in the country at that time. Del Mar’s Harvin Student Center, named after the institution’s first full-time president, E.L. Harvin, was built the next year.
After celebrating its Silver Anniversary in 1960, the College built the Administration Building on the West Campus. Within the next five years, the College added additional buildings to that campus. Construction included the Restaurant Management Building, the Diesel Mechanics Building, and the Edwin Flato Technologies Building.
In 1967, the College constructed the Maintenance Building and four paved parking lots, renovated the History Building, and prepared the site for the William F. White, Jr. Library. The College’s current Heldenfels Administration Building was constructed in 1972 on the East Campus. Four years later, Del Mar established the English Learning Center, a building originally constructed as a women’s dorm, on the East Campus and built the West Campus Coleman Center.
