4. VEHICULAR/PEDESTRIAN CIRCULATION PATTERNS Pedestrian and vehicular patterns will develop in a linear fashion along the north/south spine that characterizes the West Campus. Parking is organized to provide minimum interference with pedestrians and maximum access to present and future buildings. Parking capacities relate well to building capacities. Head-in parking presently located east of the shops buildings will be eliminated, and that area will be developed as a major pedestrian way. Pedestrian movement will generally be in a north/south direction and will flank the roadway. It will provide convenient access to all buildings and be landscaped and lighted to provide a safe and pleasant environment. A major outdoor gathering space was created in the area adjoining the Coleman Center and the Barth Learning Resources Center. Future development should include outdoor student gathering places throughout the campus.
The new loop road will reduce vehicular traffic along the street east of the shop buildings and provide a convenient way to service the central utility plant and thermal water storage tank. The road will also provide access to the proposed health science facility and recreational facilities west of the road.
