Improvement Goals
The College’s Facilities Master Plan Committee and the Design Team met in workshop sessions and developed a set of improvement goals for this plan. Although most categories related to physical facilities, some topics addressed the overall needs of the College.
- AUTOMOBILE PARKING/HANDICAPPED PARKING The most prominent complaint of those interviewed was the lack of accessible and convenient parking at the East Campus. There was also a concern that parking for the handicapped was not adequate on both campuses. Presently, there are over 2,750 parking spaces on the East Campus and over 800 on the West Campus. These numbers meet local codes and criteria but fail to provide the convenience of being able to park near the front door of every building on the campuses. As the cores of the campuses, primarily the East Campus, take more of a pedestrian character, the distance from the building’s front doors to available parking will be increased. The goal of this plan is to develop an atmosphere where the student, once he exits his car, will move in a pleasant, landscaped pedestrian atmosphere. This situation will offset the need to park opposite the front door of every building. A balance of parking requirements between the East and West Campus will be achieved by the consolidation of the Health Science programs on the West Campus. Major expansion of facilities on the East Campus will require the construction of a 900-1200 car parking structure.
- EXISTING BUILDING CONDITIONS As the inventory of existing buildings ages, the structures will require major renovation or on-going repairs. Major renovations are necessary due to deferred maintenance or functional obsolescence of the structures. Projects should be separated into two categories - A. Those projects reflecting expenditures, in excess of $300,000.00, in response to functional obsolescence or major renovation which would be financed as a capital expenditure and B. Normal repairs such as roof maintenance, mechanical equipment replacements, painting, and new carpet which should be funded in annual operations.
3. BUILDING CONTENTS/FURNISHINGS/EQUIPMENT New and updated physical facilities require that contents also are taken into consideration. Thus, any new or major renovation project should include a line item for furnishings and equipment. The College should maintain an annual purchasing program for equipment and furnishings.
