• Welcome to the Del Mar College Department of GED/ABE/ESL

    We change lives.  Our award-winning program is a structured, active, and educational approach that provides high quality instruction.  It is our commitment to assist students with planning and decision making to achieve educational, career, and personal goals.  We provide support and instruction to empower students to achieve these goals.  The Del Mar College team is a group of highly trained individuals who share the importance of knowledge and education.  Our program offers state of the art technology, books, and materials along with resources beyond the program.  This program is funded through a federal education grant and is free of charge.  In return, students work hard toward their goals.

    Programs Offered 

     

    1. ABE:  Improve your basic literacy skills.  These classes are free through the GED Center. 
    2. GED:  Prepare for the GED exam.  These classes are available free of charge through the GED
      Education Center.GED Privacy Policy 2008 (pdf) 
    3. ESL:  Improve your listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English.  These classes are available free of charge through the GED Education Center.
    Class Times:  Classes are held Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 12 pm or 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm.  Students enroll each month.

    ESL students must call the ESL Hotline at 698-1824 for an informational message recorded in Spanish.

    Steps You Will Need to Take  

    West Campus Classes 

    Step 1: Attend orientation. Orientations are offered throughout the year at the Center for Economic Development at 3209 S. Staples, please see the schedule below.  Students MUST attend the entire orientation

    Step 2: Register for a GED/ABE class - Registration dates will be provided.   that will begin the month following the orientation class. Because of high demand for services during registration, some students may be placed on a waiting list until space becomes available. Two attempts will be made to contact you from the waiting list. If we are unable to reach you, we will proceed with the next person on the waiting list until all available slots are filled. It is your responsibility to provide current and valid contact information when you sign the waiting list. Call 698-1748 to keep your contact information current and complete. Where to Register : The GED Education Center at 485 Airport Road. Students may register 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday or from 7:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Friday.)

    Step 3: Begin your GED/ABE class on the date closest to the day you registered as listed below.

     

    *Due to the high demand and limited availability, students may be placed on a waiting list at the time of registration.  Students are responsible for ensuring that their contact information is up-to-date.

    **The West Campus program does NOT accept students who are under 17 years of age and court ordered for truancy.  These students must contact the Adult Learning Center for enrollment information at (361) 878-2560.

     

    Northwest Center 

    Step 1:  Attend orientation.  Orientations are offered throughout the year at the Northwest Center (see schedule below) at the Northwest Center located at 13725 Northwest Boulevard, Corpus Christi, TX 78410.

    Step 2:  Register for GED/ABE class - You will be registered on the same day as orientation.

    Step 3:  Begin your GED/ABE class  

     

    *The Northwest Center program DOES accept students who are 16/17 years old and are court ordered for truancy.  Students who are court ordered are accepted upon completing additional program requirements as outlined during orientation. 

     

    **Students who attend the Del Mar College Northwest Center orientation are only eligible for classes held at the Northwest Center

     

    ESL Classes 

    Step 1:  Contact the ESL office to schedule an interview and entrance exam:  (361) 698-2734.

    Step 2:  Complete the interview and entrance exam.

    Step 3:  Register for class on the date provided.

    Step 4:  Attend class on the date provided at registration. 

     

    *Students may be placed on a waiting list at registration.  Please provide your current contact information so we can call when there is space.  

    **ESL classes are only held at the West Campus

    Location of Classes 

    Classes are offered at two locations:  West Campus and the Northwest Center.  West Campus classes are located in the GED Education Center at 485 Airport Road at Santa Elena.  The Northwest Center classes are offered at 13725 Northwest Boulevard near the intersection of Highway 77 and FM 624.  Day and Evening orientations are held at the Center for Economic Development at 3209 S. Staples (across from Ray High School) and orientations for classes at the Northwest Center are held at the same location.

     Orientation Information 

    Orientation is held on a first come, first served basis.  Seating is limited, so please arrive early.  Orientation is free of charge and open to students who meet eligibility requirements.  Please bring the following to orientation:

       

    • Notebook 
    • 2 pencils (with erasers) 
    • Pen:  Blue/Black ink 
    • Social Security Number (if applicable) 
    • Students under 18 years of age must bring withdrawal papers from the last school attended

    GED Certificates, Test Scores, and Verification

    GED® is a trademarked acronym used for the General Educational Development Tests, a battery of examinations administered by states and jurisdictions to measure the skills and knowledge similar to a high school course of study.  GED® graduates earn a GED® credential.  The type of credential issued, diploma or certificate, varies by state.
