Programs Offered
- General Educational Development (GED) program is designed to help you prepare
to take and pass the GED exam. These classes are available free of charge through

- The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program is designed to help you improve your
basic literacy skills. These classes are available free of charge through the GED
Education Center.
- The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed to help you learn
survival English communications skills. These classes are available free of charge
through the GED Education Center.

Enrollment Information
To enroll students must call the GED/ABE Hotline at 698-1756 for information regarding enrollment and class schedules. ESL students must call the ESL Hotline at 698-1824 for an informational message recorded in Spanish.
Three Steps You Will Need to Take
Step 1: Attend orientation. Orientations are offered throughout the year, please see the schedule below.
Step 2: Register for a GED/ABE class that will begin the month following the orientation class. Because of high demand for services during registration, some students may be placed on a waiting list until space becomes available. Two attempts will be made to contact you from the waiting list. If we are unable to reach you, we will proceed with the next person on the waiting list until all available slots are filled. It is your responsibility to provide current and valid contact information when you sign the waiting list. Call 698-1748 to keep your contact information current and complete. Location of Classes
Classes are offered at two locations: West Campus and the Northwest Center. West Campus classes are located in the GED Education Center at 485 Airport Road at Santa Elena. The Northwest Center classes are offered at 13725 Northwest Boulevard near the intersection of Highway 77 and FM 624. Day and Evening orientations are held at the Center for Economic Development at 3209 S. Staples (across from Ray High School) and orientations for classes at the Northwest Center are held at the same location.

Description of Services Offered to GED/ABE/ESL Populations
The GED Program's mission is to provide developmental education to those students ineligible to enter college credit courses and to give them the basic academic, language and personal skills needed for future academic, occupational/technical and personal success. The program accomplishes its purpose by offering GED test preparation, Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language classes. GED graduates are assisted to transition into college by a transition liaison.
Through small and large group instruction, cooperative learning, project-based learning, computer-assisted instruction, and individualized instruction, deficiencies in writing, math or reading are addressed under the guidance of an instructor. Schedules are structured to give students sufficient time to demonstrate measurable gains. Progression through the program is monitored closely by instructors with frequent and periodic feedback provided to students. Once students demonstrate the required proficiencies, they are transitioned into higher level academic tracks. GED students demonstrating sufficient academic mastery to pass all five GED tests on the first attempt are awarded a GED Testing Fee Scholarship. Instruction is planned to correspond to all levels of public education.
All classes are free of charge.
On average, students whose attendance rate is 80 percent or higher tend to progress through academic tracks faster than those who do not maintain high rates of attendance. GED students who are reading at the 8th grade level and whose math is at least at the 7th grade level at the point-of-entry into the program, tend to pass the GED Test within six months of enrollment. The five most important factors affecting the length of time it will take students to demonstrate academic gains are: the length of time the student has been out of school, the last grade the student completed, attendance while enrolled in the program, whether or not the student has significant learning disabilities, and whether or not the student is a lifelong reader.
Classes are offered Monday through Thursday in the morning and evening based on demand. Prior to registration, new ABE and GED students must complete an orientation. ESL students must complete a one-on-one orientation by appointment. There is no tuition or fees for any of the classes offered through the Program; however, continued enrollment in the program is based on each student's ability to demonstrate steady measurable academic gains. This ensures maximum access to services to all eligible students.

Purpose : To determine student academic placement within the program.
Who : ABE and GED students must be present for the entire orientation in order to qualify to register in the program. ESL students are not required to attend an orientation.
Place : 3209 S. Staples, Center for Economic Development, corner of Staples and Kostoryz /13275 Northwest Boulevard
Times : Morning Sessions meet 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.; Evening Sessions meet 6:30 p.m. -9:30 p.m/NWC Orientations are from 9 am to 4 pm
Days : Monday through Thursday/NWC - varies
Registration for Orientation: No registration is necessary. Attendance is on a first-come-first-served basis. Seating is limited, so please arrive early.
