Welcome to the American Sign Language and Interpreting Program!

The American Sign Language & Interpreting Program provides coursework and experiences that prepare students for careers working with persons who are deaf or hard of hearing. The program also provides American Sign Language classes for students who need a foreign language, serving both Del Mar and Texas A&M— Corpus Christi students.

There are three tracks students may choose to follow:

The certificate program is designed for those whose plan careers in some area in which they expect to encounter persons who are deaf or hard of hearing, and with to gain knowledge and skills that will enhance their ability to provide professional services to this special population.

An Associate in Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis on Deaf Studies/Deaf Education is the beginning step toward a Master’s degree in Deaf Education for those who want to teach students who are deaf or hard of hearing in Texas public schools. This degree transfers to Texas A&M University— Kingsville, where students will work on a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education with an emphasis on Deaf Education/Deaf Studies. The final step in the process is to enroll in the Texas Women’s University online Master’s degree program in Deaf Education.

For those who wish to become sign language interpreters, there is an Associate of Applied Science degree. This program requires students to have demonstrated knowledge and skills in both English and American Sign Language and apply for admission to the program. Upon admission, students will take courses that will prepare them for the Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreters Basic Interpreting Certification exam.
