The QuickTime Plug-In

The Quicktime player is a plug-in that is installed in your browser’s plug-in file or folder.  It will allow you to listen to musical examples and/or view movies on course web sites through your browser.  All students must have QuickTime 7.0 or higher installed on their computers. You can download the plug-in for free at the QuickTime web site. (When downloading and/or installing, you may be asked to purchase QuickTime Pro. You do not need that for this course.)

To find out if you already have QuickTime 7.0 or higher installed on your computer, click on the QuickTime icon on your desktop.

If you don’t see this icon on your desktop, and you are a Windows user, click the “Start” button and then click “Programs” to see if you have you have QuickTime installed on your computer.  If you don’t see it in the list of programs, you will need to install it.

If you are a Macintosh user, double click on your hard drive and check the “Applications” folder to see if you have QuickTime in there. If not, you will need to install it.

Click on the pull-down menu that says “Help.” Click on “About QuickTime Player.”

A box will open up showing what version you have.

To make sure your QuickTime plug-in is working properly, click on the button below. If you hear a sound file play, your QuickTime program works. If not, you’ll get a message saying that you don’t have the plug in. In that case, you should go ahead and download it. (Note: this sound file will not tell you if you have the QuickTime 7.0 or higher installed.  It will only tell you if you have some working version of QuickTime on your computer.  You MUST upgrade to 7.0 or higher for this class.)
