NEWS of ALUMNI THE FIFTIES Fahed (Fred) Hanna (euphonium and string bass) is retired after a teaching career with the Corpus Christi ISD. He stays busy by singing with the Corpus Christi Chorale and in his church choir. He toured England and Scotland last summer and plans a trip to Morocco this year
John de Salme (trombone) retired last year after a distinguished teaching career. At the same time, he also retired as director of the renowned Eastern Iowa Brass Band, a position he had held for ten years
Peggy Yoes Alt (voice) lives in Tryon, North Carolina. Ted García (trombone) was a guest of honor in March at the fortieth anniversary celebration of Del Mar's Kappa Chi Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Ted is a counselor at Corpus Christi King High School. THE SEVENTIES Earla Picton (trumpet) is in her tenth year of directing bands in Aransas Pass. She's also the proud mother of two all-region band members
Ed (trombone) and Wanda (horn) Avila are staying busy. Ed still teaches in Robstown, and Wanda is in her second year as assistant band director at Gregory-Portland Jr. High. Wanda's non-varsity band received straight first divisions at the spring contest

Jay Barksdale (bassoon) works at the New York City Public Library. He says that he's still an active member of The Eight Society. The Corpus Christi King High School non-varsity band, directed by Tim Boland (trumpet) received straight first divisions at concert contest for the first time ever
Gualberto Besinaiz (trumpet) died on July 13, 2001 after a courageous battle with cancer. A graduate of Del Mar and CCSU, he received his master's degree in music from the University of North Texas. He was a dedicated band director for nineteen years and was referred to lovingly as "Mr. B" by his many students
Hector Oliveira (bass) is a freelance bass player in Europe, working mainly in Spain. He's the proud father of a daughter, Hannah May, born in March of 2000
Andrea Stennett Warren (piano) lives in Houston, where she has a private piano studio and her husband Wayne works at NASA. Their son, David, was born in 2002. It's a girl for Kim Combs Hooper (horn) and her husband Troy! Emily Rae Hooper was born on July 5, at a healthy seven pounds, six ounces and twenty inches. Mother and daughter are both doing fine After leaving Del Mar, Steve Garbade (composition) graduated from the Berklee College of Music with a degree in film scoring. He lives in Los Angeles, where he's worked in foley engineering (look it up) in addition to his composing. He recently composed the music for a play at the Pacific Resident Theater Robert Lopez (trumpet) teaches at Laredo's Vidal M. Treviño School of Communications and Fine Arts. And Robert's son, Bobby Lopez (percussion), is on the band staff in Calallen Jerardo Morales (saxophone) did his student teaching in the spring and graduated from Texas A&M University-Kingsville in May. An active Sinfonian during his Del Mar days, Jerald is working to reactivate the Phi Mu Alpha chapter at A&M-Kingsville Carlos Vega (percussion) plays in the wind ensemble at the University of Arizona. He studies with former Del Mar percussion professor Norman Weinberg.
