Friday, October 23 Classical Guitar Concert with Guest Artist Gabriel Ayala, 7:30 p.m., Wolfe Recital Hall, Ayers at Kosar, free with a valid DMC I.D. or $5 general admission. A member of the Yaqui people of southern Arizona, Gabriel Ayala is at the forefront of a new generation of Native Americans making a career performing classical music. A former Del Mar College student, Ayala performs regularly across the United States and has appeared at the Kennedy Center for the Arts, the National Museum for the American Indian, the Arizona State University Keer Cultural Center and the Meyer Theatre in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Recognized by the state of Arizona and Gov. Janet Napolitano for his musical achievements, Ayala has released three self-distributed albums and recently signed with Canyon Records, which released their first-ever classical compact disc titled Portraits. Thursday, October 29 Del Mar College Jazz Combos in Concert, 7:30 p.m., Wolfe Recital Hall, Ayers at Kosar. The DMC Jazz Combos –– including the DMC MWF Jazz Band, the Jazz Rhythm Section, the Del Mar Jazz Combo, Jazz Guitar Ensemble and others–– will perform various styles under the direction of David Irving. Monday, November 2 Dia de los Muertos “Musical Ofrenda” with Del Mar College’s Mariachi Ensembles, 7:30 p.m., Wolfe Recital Hall, Ayers at Kosar. Celebrate Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, with Del Mar College’s Mariachi ensembles including Mariachi Del Mar, the DMC Mariachi Ensemble and other special guests, including Ballet Folklorico. You won’t want to miss this spectacular event featuring a “musical ofrenda” to mark the occasion. Attendees are welcome to bring items to add to the community ofrenda (altar). Wednesday, November 11 Del Mar College Percussion Ensemble in Concert, 7:30 p.m., Wolfe Recital Hall, Ayers at Kosar. You can expect one reverberating experience as the DMC Percussion Ensemble performs the new piece for four drumsets called “Octobot” by Andrea Mazzariello. The group will also play foot-tapping xylophone rags by George Hamilton Green and Christopher Rouse’s grooving “Bonham,” a tribute to legendary drummer John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. Friday, November 13 Solo Recital with Distinguished Guest Pianist Michael Lewin, 7:30 p.m., Wolfe Recital Hall, Ayers at Kosar, $5 general admission and free for DMC employees and students with a valid College I.D. Internationally-renowned pianist Michael Lewin returns to Del Mar College for a solo recital featuring works by Haydn, Chopin, Liszt and Gershwin. Lewin has performed throughout the United States as a soloist and chamber musician as well as across Europe and Asia. His musicianship has earned him many distinguished awards and recognition from such organizations as the Franz Liszt International Competition, Rockefeller Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts and the Aaron Copland Recording Fund. Lewin’s numerous recordings feature works by Liszt, Griffes, Scarlatti, Gottschalk, Bolcom and several Russian composers. His most recent compact disc, “If I Were a Bird,” was released earlier this year. This event is sponsored by the Del Mar College Cultural Program Series. Sunday, November 15 Corpus Christi Chamber Orchestra at Del Mar College in Concert, 4 p.m., Wolfe Recital Hall, Ayers at Kosar. Under the direction of R. Todd Ehle, the Corpus Christi Chamber Orchestra presents several works, including “Unfinished” Symphony No. 8 by Franz Schubert, “Tarantella for Flute, Clarinet and Orchestra” by Camille Saint-Saens and featuring DMC musicians Ralph Goonan on clarinet and Paul Klemm on flute, and a premiere piece by local composer Dr. Elwood Brown. Sunday, November 15 Flagship Jazz Cruise Under the Stars with the DMC Jazz Ensembles, 7:30 to 9 p.m., People’s Street T-head near downtown Corpus Christi, $10 per person. Cruise through the city harbor and the bay under the stars while listening to a cool line-up of jazz played by Del Mar College’s Jazz Ensembles––including the MWF Jazz Band, the Jazz Combo and the Jazz Guitar Ensemble––under the direction of David Irving. Tickets are available from any jazz band member, the DMC Music Office (located in the Fine Arts Center Music Building on Del Mar College East, Ayers at Kosar) or at the dock. Monday, November 16 Del Mar Children’s Chorus Fall Concert, 7 p.m., Wolfe Recital Hall, Ayers at Kosar, $5 for adults and $2 for children under age 10 and free with a valid DMC I.D. Under the direction of DMC director of choral activities Dennis S. Richardson and children’s chorus artistic director Ouida Bliss Richardson, the Del Mar Children’s Chorus, which is a community singing group for area youth, will perform several selections. The fall concert features separate performances by the chorus’ ensembles––Coristas, Vaqueros, Estrellitas and Cantantes––and singing such selections as “Hi-Up Barbaree,” “Pirate Song,” “My Shadow,” “Come Closer,” “Ah, Poor Bird,” “Shooting Star” and more. Singers are from various schools in the Coastal Bend and range in ages 7 to 14. Linda Weber and Dinzin Broñola-Rada will accompany the singers on piano. Tuesday, November 17 Del Mar College Brass Ensembles in Concert, 7:30 p.m., Wolfe Recital Hall, Ayers at Kosar. Del Mar College’s Music Department presents a mixture of student brass ensembles, including a brass quintet, trio, trombone quartet and full brass choir, as they perform chamber music in a variety of styles. The student ensembles study under DMC brass faculty members Dr. Scott Hagarty, Karl Kemm and Dr. Donald Pinson. The evening also features a musical re-debut as the Del Mar Faculty Brass Trio performs standard classical brass trio literature. Friday, November 20 “A Night at the Opera” with the Del Mar Singer’s Theater, 7:30 p.m., Wolfe Recital Hall, Ayers at Kosar. The Del Mar Singer’s Theater presents an evening of one-act operas featuring Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s “The Servant Mistress” and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Bastien and Bastienna” during “A Night at the Opera.” Under the direction of Dr. Raphael Rada, you’ll enjoy abridged versions as the Singer’s Theater performs the beloved one-act comic operas to the accompaniment of Dinzin Broñola-Rada on piano. Saturday, November 21 “Adventures in Music: Instruments of the String Family,” Featuring String Students of Del Mar College Music Faculty Susan Sturman, 10 a.m., Wolfe Recital Hall, Ayers at Kosar. String students of Del Mar College Professor of Cello Susan Sturman will perform a short concert to introduce young audience members ages three to eight to instruments of the string family. A music center fair will follow the performance to give youngsters a hands-on musical enrichment experience with a string instrument “petting zoo” that will allow them to touch, feel and make some sound on the instruments. Don’t miss this holiday spectacular as the Department of Music and Friends of Music at Del Mar College bring the “sounds of the season” back to Richardson Performance Hall for a second annual Holiday Concert. Ensembles from across the entire department will play tunes that inspire those Winter Wonderland memories, including performances by the Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, MWF Jazz Band and the Brass Choir all together for an exciting evening that will put you in the holiday spirit. Tuesday, December 15 “Festive Holiday Favorites” Performance by the Del Mar Master Chorus and Del Mar Children’s Chorus, 7 p.m., Richardson Performance Hall, Ayers and Baldwin. Under the direction of Children’s Chorus artistic director Ouida Bliss Richardson and Del Mar College director of choral activities Dennis S. Richardson, the College’s community ensembles––the Del Mar Master Chorus and Del Mar Children’s Chorus––presents a concert featuring a variety of holiday and seasonal selections such as “Silent Night,” “Sussex Carol,” “I Heard the Bells,” “Festival Magnificat,” “Cornish Wassail” and “Zol Zain Sholem.” Joining the Del Mar ensembles are guest performers, the Carroll High School Concert Choir and Madrigals under the direction of Melody Brannen. Tuesday, December 22 Tuba Christmas, Noon, La Palmera Mall
Food Court. Take a break from the holiday rush as nearly 100 tuba,
euphonium, baritone and sousaphone musicians play everyone’s favorite
Christmas tunes. This musical event promises “Winter Wonderland”
memories to get you in the holiday spirit. Area tuba, euphonium and
baritone players interested in participating in this year’s Tuba Christmas
can attend the rehearsal from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. the morning of Dec.
22 in Room 127 in the Center for the Arts at Texas A&M University-
Corpus Christi. Registration to participate begins at 9:00 a.m. with a
$5 registration fee. TUBA CHRISTMAS carol books will be available
during the registration for $15. Hats and scarves will also be available for
purchase. Musicians need to provide their own stands for the rehearsal
