Mr. Darrell Brown

Darrell Brown is an active conductor, clinician, and music educator currently serving as the director of the Del Mar College Concert Band, and is the director of the institution’s Summer “Viking” Band Camp.  Mr. Brown is the coordinator of the DMC Music Department’s burgeoning mariachi program and is the director of Mariachi Del Mar – the official mariachi of Del Mar College.  He also serves as the chairman of the department’s Friends of Music – an organization dedicated to bringing the community great musical performances that generate funds to support students financially in their music education pursuits.  Other responsibilities within the department include teaching brass ensembles and courses in music theory, brass methods, and music appreciation.  He is the founder of the annual Del Mar College Honor Band, comprised of local high school musicians and held in January of each year.  Mr. Brown is a new music enthusiast that has commissioned three works for band and is a co-founder with professor Neil Flory of the DMC “Composition Symposium” which continues to commission new works for his band at Del Mar. 

Prior to his tenure at Del Mar College, Brown was the Director of Bands at Provo High School in Provo, Utah where he headed up a comprehensive and award-winning band program and served as an associate conductor to the Utah Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra.  Mr. Brown also spent the summer of 2001 teaching music at the Camelot Schools in Kwekwe, Zimbabwe.  Brown earned his both his BM in Music education and his MM in Instrumental Conducting from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.  He resides in Corpus Christi, Texas with his wife Robyn (a cellist) and his three daughters: Ada, Ruth, and Ramona.
