Trombone and Low Brass
A native of San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Donald Pinson holds degrees from Texas Christian University (Bachelor of Music Education), Southern Methodist University (Master of Music), and the University of North Texas (Doctor of Musical Arts.) His principal teachers have included Vern Kagarice, John Kitzman, Dennis Bubert, Barney McCollum, and Ron Wilkins.
Dr. Pinson has performed extensively in diverse styles, including classical, early music, jazz, and salsa. As an orchestral musician, he has performed with ensembles such as the Dallas and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras, and he formerly held positions with the Richardson Symphony Orchestra and the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra. In addition to the alto and tenor trombone, he is also experienced performing early music on the sackbut, most notably under conductor Helmut Rilling as part of the Festivalensemble Stuttgart (Germany) in August-September 2006. Dr. Pinson is also active as a chamber musician and soloist, performing regularly at various colleges and universities, conferences, and other public venues. He has taken a particular interest in performing the literature for solo trombone and organ, and he recently lectured on this topic at the International Trombone Festival in Aarhus, Denmark (June 2009.)
Dr. Pinson’s duties at Del Mar include teaching trombone, euphonium, and tuba students, brass ensembles, and courses in music theory, and music appreciation. Prior to his appointment at Del Mar, Dr. Pinson taught students at Brookhaven College, the University of Texas at Arlington, and the University of North Texas, and he also maintained a large private studio in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.
