Studio Overview

image of malletsThe Percussion Studio at Del Mar College, like every area in the program of music,offers developmental opportunities which extend far beyond the bounds of weekly, private lessons. Training in basic motion studies, snare drum, timpani, mallets, drum set, multiple percussion, electronic percussion and recital preparation is offered. If you want an excellent percussion experience, this is the place!

 

 

 

Facilities

image of bandOur percussion facilities include three locked practice rooms devoted exclusively to percussion student practice. An inventory that includes virtually every percussion category and over 600 works of percussion literature, are available for study and practice. At Del Mar, having access to the finest instruments will help develop your sound concepts. During the past nine years, Del Mar developed an Electronic Percussion performance studio which is state-of-the-art. It is one of the most advanced electronic percussion studio in the entire United States. Students can use everything from the classic Silicon Mallet to Roland's V-Drums. This combined with the Music Technology Lab gives students access to the equipment and the expertise needed for a quality electronic percussion education. In the traditional realm, we have a well stocked inventory of drums, timpani, stands, accessories and keyboards including two beautiful MarimbaOne instruments: a low C (5 Octave) and a low E (4.6) in addition to standard Musser and Deagan low A's.

image of drumsDel Mar College also offers an opportunity to hear and meet some of the best musicians in the world. In the past, we've had clinics, master classes, and concerts by Peter Erskine, Kenny Aronoff, Janis Potter , Keiko Abe, Leigh Howard Stevens, George Gaber, Tom Toyama, Marty Hurley, The Hands On'Semble , Chris Hanning, Lalo Davila, Rebecca Kite, Richard Flores, Ron Samuels, Tony Edwards, Lamar Burkhalter, Battu, Submedia and Virtual Max . It is the goal of this percussion studio to provide the best possible learning environment for our students. We strive to instill in each student the highest possible level of performance and education in the various facets of percussion. Each year we strive to bring in the best. If we can't bring them in, then maybe we can go to them - such as the Road trip to Weckl!

Ensembles

Performance opportunities for the percussionist at Del Mar College include the Percussion Ensemble , Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, two Jazz Bands. The Del Mar Percussion Ensemble extends training in chamber music performance of new and arranged works from traditional through the avant-garde. It is the premier chamber group in South Texas.
