Piano students may be performance majors, pedagogy majors, or music education majors. Private lessons are available for music majors with prior piano experience. For those majors with no prior experience, studies begin in class piano using the Yamaha electric piano facilities. As with all music majors, pianists will participate in weekly seminars where technical and musical concerns are discussed as they relate to laboratory or recital performances.

Students have many opportunities to hear fine piano recitals by guest artists during the academic year. Well-known artists such as Abbey Simon, Ralph Votapek, James Tocco, Anthony di Bonaventura, Caio Pagano and Enrique Graf have performed on the Del Mar Student Cultural Program Series or in recitals sponsored by the department.

Our students have gone on to complete degrees at various institutions and have become successful performing musicians and private piano teachers.
