Cello/Bass

Professor Susan Sturman teaches cello and double bass at Del Mar College.  In addition to private lessons, low string students participate in a weekly studio class where they perform informally the repertoire studied in lessons.  Studio class is also a time when everyone works together on building technique including intonation studies, etudes, and scale work.  When time permits the class enjoys playing music written for low string ensemble.  Frequently we choose literature that explores alternative styles such as jazz, blues, Celtic, and folk.

Biannually, Professor Sturman and the Del Mar College Department of Music host a Cellobration!  This is a day of activities celebrating the cello and cello playing.  It includes performances, clinics, and master classes.  Students have come from all over Texas to participate in this event.  Professor Sturman always presents a hands-on clinic on some aspect of cello playing and a guest artist is engaged to present a master class.  Past guest artists include Regina Mushabac, Irene Sharp, Paul Katz, Jans Jorgen Jensen and others.

Cello and bass students from Del Mar College have gone on to receive bachelor’s and master’s degrees from institutions such as the University of Houston, Texas State University, Texas Tech University, and Texas A & M University – Corpus Christi.  Many former Del Mar cello and bass students can be found teaching in public school music programs in Corpus Christi, San Antonio, and other Texas communities.
