Welcome to the Del Mar College flute web site! I'm Dr. Kairies, the flute professor at Del Mar, and I'd like to invite you to be a part of our program. We have many exciting opportunities for both music majors and non-majors. Below is a summary of our offerings. If you have any questions or would like more information on our programs, please click on "Send Me Info!" link on your left. Thanks for visiting!

Music Degree Programs:

Del Mar College offers two different degree plans for instrumental music majors, the Associate in Arts in Applied Music and the Associate in Arts in Instrumental Music Education. Both degrees are transferrable to four year colleges and universities. Most of our students choose the instrumental music education degree plan which satisfies the lower division requirements for all-level teacher certification. The applied music degree plan is more performance orientated and does not lead to teacher certification.

Del Mar College is a great place to start your music career! The faculty at Del Mar has outstanding credentials. You'll get to work with highly trained professionals every day. Your lessons and classes will be taught by regular faculty members - not graduate students or the professor's assistant - and our small class sizes will ensure that you receive a lot of individual attention. You won't be lost in the crowd here. Our professors are very knowledgeable about the music profession and will work with you to reach your educational and professional goals. Finally, our tuition rates are very reasonable and many scholarship opportunities are available. You can't get a better educational deal anywhere!

Course Offerings for Flutists:

Private Lessons for Music Majors

Private lessons are a requirement for all music majors. Lessons will focus on helping students acquire the skills and experience necessary to succeed as professionals. Music majors can expect to study solo literature from all of the major style periods. In addition, scales, appeggios, etudes and other exercises may be given in order to help build the technique students will need to be successful at the transfer institution. Students gain performance experience by playing on Friday afternoon solo recitals, and by performing in studio labs. Lab time may also be used to explore a variety of topics of interest to future professional flutists such as teaching techniques, audition and performance preparation, career opportunities for flutists, ensemble rehearsal and performance, the techniques of master flutists, and an overview of standard flute literature.

In order to register for music major lessons, you will need the permission of the instructor. An audition may be required to determine your readiness for music major study. Students who have not yet reached a high enough skill level may be required to take one or more semesters of non-major lessons before enrolling in major lessons.

Private Lessons for Non-Majors

Private lessons are available for adult non-music majors of any level. At the first lesson of the semester, we will discuss your goals and devise a course of study to help you reach them. Non-majors typically study selected solos, as well as etudes and exercises to help improve technique. Performance opportunities are available for non-majors. Non-majors may also attend Friday afternoon flute labs if the topic interests them.

You do not need instructor permission to sign up for non-major lessons. Here are the course registration codes that you will need when you register. You may choose to sign up for either a 1/2 hour lesson per week or a full hour lesson per week. (Please note that the availability of evening lessons is limited. If you are interested in evening lessons, please contact Dr. Kairies before signing up.)

If this is your first or second semester in lessons sign up for the following:

  • 1/2 hour lesson per week: MUAP 1117 043
  • 1 hour lesson per week: MUAP 1117 043 and MUAP 1118 043 (sign up for both)

Dual Credit Lessons

The dual credit program allows high achieving high school students the opportunity to simultaneously earn both high school and college credit for applied music. Only students from high schools with whom Del Mar College has a contractual agreement are eligible to enroll. Students must meet the eligibility requirements specified in the college catalog. In addition, flute students must have the permission of Dr. Kairies before enrolling in the dual credit program.

At the present time, space in the dual credit flute lesson program is limited. If there are more applicants than there is space available, students will be required to audition for a spot in the program. Top priority will be given to applicants who are willing to commit to being music majors (with flute as the major instrument) at Del Mar College in the fall semester immediately following high school graduation. Students who are interested in the program should apply to the college and complete all required tests well in advance of the anticipated enrollment date. Applications for dual credit lessons cannot be considered until the student has been admitted to the college.

Early Enrollment Lessons:

The early enrollment program allows high achieving high school students the opportunity to take college courses while still in high school. Students must be a junior or senior in high school to be eligible and must meet the eligibility requirements specified in the college catalog. In addition, flute students must have the permission of Dr. Kairies before enrolling in the early enrollment program.
