Del Mar College
Affiliate of the
National Coalition Building Institute
Mission
The Del Mar College Affiliate of the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) is dedicated to ending the mistreatment of every group, regardless of whether the mistreatment stems from the group's identity in nationality, race, ethnicity, class, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, job, or life circumstance. The members of the Del Mar College NCBI Affiliate work together as a team to cultivate respect and alliance between and among groups by breaking down barriers that exist because of a lack of understanding.
Overview
The members of the NCBI team at Del Mar present workshops on prejudice reduction, conflict resolution and community building for an open audience which frequently includes students, faculty, staff, and community residents. The workshops follow the model developed by Ms. Cherie Brown of NCBI International and engage those in attendance in exercises which promote an understanding of the role of cultural bias in daily life. Participants also examine ways to enhance and create alliance, decrease defensiveness, and effectively navigate multicultural environments. Team members meet throughout the academic year to practice presentation skills, review workshop evaluations, and discuss ways to promote appreciation for cultural diversity on campus.
