:: Dr. Figueroa Selected as Provost and Vice President of Instruction
October 13, 2009
Incoming administrator to begin duties in spring
Dr. Fernando Figueroa, currently Dean of University Studies at Tyler Junior College (TJC), will assume the position of Provost and Vice President of Instruction at Del Mar College in the spring semester. Previously, he served for two years as the Dean of Arts and Letters at Morton College, a community college in Cicero, Illinois.
At TJC, he created the Academic Standards Committee and served on the Strategic Plan Leadership Team. He also served on the Reaffirmation Leadership Team for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accreditation process. Del Mar College will undergo its reaffirmation process by SACS next year.
Dr. Figueroa holds a Ph.D. and a Masters of Arts in English from Louisiana State University and a Bachelor’s Degree, graduating cum laude, from Loyola University in New Orleans. He has classroom teaching experience from the University of Texas at Tyler as well as River Parishes Community College and Baton Rouge Community College, both in Louisiana.
“Dr. Figueroa has a breadth of experience and vision to position Del Mar College as a leader in general educational excellence and assessment of student learning,” says DMC President Dr. Mark Escamilla. “As Provost and Vice President of Instruction, Dr. Figueroa will serve as the chief academic officer with general campus oversight.”
Dr. Figueroa was a leader on the team that prepared Baton Rouge Community College for its inaugural accreditation by SACS. He played an important role in aligning instructional processes to prepare Morton College for its institutional accreditation. While at Tyler Junior College, he created the Academic Standards Committee. Today, he represents Tyler Junior College on a statewide group working with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to review assessment of general education to produce academic excellence in all Texas community colleges.
This semester, Del Mar College launched “Access to Excellence, Strategic Plan for 2009-2014.” Dr. Figueroa’s experience managing educational grants, presiding over a faculty senate and monitoring graduates’ degrees demonstrates a wide range of expertise called for by that strategic plan.
“Del Mar College is entering an exciting period in its growth. I am honored to be chosen as part of the team to lead Del Mar College into the next phase of its service to South Texas,” Dr. Figueroa said of his appointment. “We are thrilled to be coming to the vibrant community of Corpus Christi.”
Dr. Figueroa has presented numerous lectures to the National Institution for Staff and Organizational Development on topics ranging from institutional effectiveness to community college leadership.
