FYI: It looks as though Big Bad Voodoo Daddy will have worked their magic as the feature artists for the 2009 Come Home to Del Mar College scholarship fundraiser, “Swing Into Scholarships,” scheduled tomorrow night in Richardson Performance Hall. Organizers are keeping secret for now the amount of funds raised from this year’s event, but they will announce the net amount going toward scholarships at the beginning of the concert at 7:30 p.m.

Both Del Mar College and DMC Foundation representatives will announce the amount during a special presentation that features major donors, along with a few students who have benefitted from scholarship funds raised through Foundation events.

Scholarships play a key role in assisting area residents’ access to higher education, especially during these challenging economic times. Last year, the Foundation awarded approximately $880,000 in scholarships to over 1,700 students for the 2008-2009 academic year. Combined, both the Foundation and the College’s Financial Aid Services Office award over $18 million in financial assistance annually.

Since arriving on the music scene in 1993, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's irresistible live show and aggressive, musically perceptive approach has proven them over time to be the singular standout among numerous bands that launched the 1990s swing revival. The seven-man group forged a massively successful fusion of classic American sounds from jazz, swing, Dixieland and big band music to build their own songbook of original dance tunes. Sixteen years later, BBVD is a veteran force that to this day adds new fans by the roomful every time they play.

They have appeared in the Super Bowl half-time show, written theme music for ESPN and network television and performed for three American presidents. The band has also appeared numerous times on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O'Brian and Live with Regis & Kelly and wrote, performed and recorded the current theme song for the late night show Last Call with Carson Daly after appearing multiple times as the house band. During last season, they performed on the reality competition Dancing With the Stars. The band’s music has also appeared in over 60 movies and television shows.

Tickets are still available and can be purchased online at www.delmar.edu/richardson or at the Richardson Performance Box Office, which will open at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. For more information about the concert, call the Box Office at 698-2226.
