Department of Art and Drama Holding Two Openings on July 11

Donated art exhibit and annual Summer Shakespeare production providing community with an evening of fine arts

From “merry wives,” knights and cobblestone walkways to a collection of diverse works on paper, Del Mar College’s Department of Art and Drama promises an evening of fine arts with two openings on July 11.

First, the art program will hold a free reception from 7 to 9 p.m. to open its summer exhibit, the Dorothy and Kenneth Holmes Collection, in the Joseph A. Cain Memorial Art Gallery, Fine Arts Center, Del Mar College East Campus, Ayers Street.

Valued at over $8,200 and a recent gift to the College, the exhibit features 26 works on paper. The exhibit is named after its benefactors and includes works by Texas artists Tom Allen, Michelle Morales and Jill Pankey. Individuals can view the collection through Sept. 9. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. until noon on Fridays. For more information about the reception and collection, call the Art Office at 698-1216.

After spending some time reviewing artwork on paper, participants can then move into the Bartlett Theatre for a trek through Elizabethan times. Del Mar Drama celebrates its 15th year of Summer Shakespeare with the production of “The Merry Wives of Windsor.”

The Bard’s comedy commemorates the middle class of his time and tells the story of the brash knight named Sir John Falstaff, a semi-famous character from Shakespeare’s historical plays about Henry V.

As the legend goes, Queen Elizabeth requested that Shakespeare write a play about the knight in love. Instead, the playwright wrote about a shallow knight and his quest to conquer two women under the guises of love. The antics ensue. And despite their husbands’ suspicions, the “merry wives” prove their virtue and outwit Sir John Falstaff in his attempts at cuckoldry.

The play remains one of Shakespeare’s most revered comedies with Del Mar Drama providing performances July 11-14 and 16-17 at 7:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on July 17. Friday, July 15, is reserved for a private performance. Admission is $7 per person with proceeds benefiting Del Mar Drama Summer Shakespeare. For more information and ticket reservations, call the Box Office at 698-1509 or email drama@delmar.edu.
