Over 1,600 Pre-schoolers Expected on Campus for Childrens Book Festival

Colorful event encourages children and parents to read together
WHO: Pre-schoolers from area childcare centers; faculty and staff from Del
Mar Colleges Department of Human Services and Lichtenstein Center for
Early Learning; representatives from other supporting organizations, including
the Corpus Christi Public Libraries; and parents and children from the general
public
WHAT: Fifth Annual Childrens Book Festival
WHEN: 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., Friday, April 15
WHERE: Grassy area in front of White Library, Del Mar College East Campus,
Ayers and Baldwin (campus map available at www.delmar.edu/maps/east.html)
VISUALS: In a festive atmosphere with brightly colored tents, three Texas
authors will read to over 1,600 pre-schoolers during the three-hour festival.
Swarms of three- to five-year-olds will also complete science/art projects based
on the stories they have heard. Each child will leave the festival with a free
book they have selected themselves. Additionally, organizers will have books
by the guest authors available for purchase.
FYI: The Corpus Christi Public Libraries, Del Mar College and several
other sponsors have united together to organize the citys Fifth Annual
Childrens Book Festival. Organizers designed the community-wide effort
to encourage early reading and literacy activities involving parents and their
children and to ensure that youngsters begin a lifetime involvement in reading.
This years festival features three Texas-based authors of favorite childrens
books David Davis (Jazz Cats and Ten Redneck Babies: A Southern
Counting Book), Jan Peck (Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea and
The Giant Carrot) and Lupe Ruiz-Flores (Lupitas Papalote/El
Papalote de Lupita). These special guests will delight well over 1,600 pre-school
age children already scheduled to attend the festival.
