FYI: It’s not often that a community college holds commencement on a university campus. But, for Del Mar College’s prospective 2005 summer graduates, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s new Performing Arts Center will serve as the venue for the graduation ceremony.

And the reason for the change in venue is?

The College is now moving forward with renovating and expanding Richardson Auditorium. Last year, the DMC Board of Regents approved Corpus Christi’s Dykemas Architects, in association with Morris Architects out of Houston, to serve as the project architects. Morris Architects, which is subcontracted through Dykemas Architects, has extensive experience working with performing arts facilities.

The facility will undergo over $4.6 million worth of renovations and expansion during the next year. Last week during their Aug. 9 meeting, the Board approved contracting Fulton/Coastcon Construction to handle project. While administrators expect project completion by fall 2006, the next commencement ceremony the College will hold in Richardson Auditorium won’t be until spring 2007.

During this summer’s commencement, participants will hear inspirational words from Carlos Valdez, District Attorney of Nueces County and former Del Mar student. For a full release about Valdez, go to www.delmar.edu/news/carlosvaldez081205.html.
