FYI: It’s an annual activity for Del Mar College employees. Convocation.

On Monday, Aug. 22, Dr. Carlos Garcia will give his State of the College address, “Maintaining Our Momentum.” The president will provide the entire College community with an update about Del Mar and offer his vision on how the College will continue fulfilling its promise.

Among Convocation activities, the College will award the annual Dr. Aileen Creighton Award for Teaching Excellence. An unsuspecting faculty member who meets award criteria was nominated by peers for the prestigious honor that is now a part of Fall Convocation.

Dr. Aileen Creighton is one of Del Mar College’s legacies. Her dedication to students and higher education serves as inspiration to other educators. During Convocation 2002, the College recognized the Dean Emeritus of Arts and Sciences for her accomplishments and vision by establishing an award in her name, the Dr. Aileen Creighton Award for Teaching Excellence.

Retiring in 1980 after 45 years with Del Mar College, Dr. Creighton returned in 1984 to continue teaching English and literature courses through the end of fall 2001. Among her accomplishments, Dr. Creighton established in the late 1960s some of the first developmental courses in the nation to prepare students for college-level English courses. The educator is also credited with envisioning and establishing the foundation for the College’s Writing Center.

Dr. Creighton’s legacy as a “master teacher” now serves as the benchmark for future Del Mar College faculty members who will receive the Dr. Aileen Creighton Award for Teaching Excellence, an award that honors her commitment to education.
