DMC Holds Rank Among Top Two Percent of Nation’s Institutions Granting Associate’s Degrees to Hispanic Students in Community College Week Report
March issue of “The Hispanic Outlook” ranks College higher using same data provided by U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Educational Statistics

Numbers were crunched, and the final report written. Community College Week lists Del Mar College in three separate rankings included in their June special issue, “The Top 100 Associate’s Degree Producers.”

The national publication provides rankings for accredited colleges and universities in the 50 states and the District of Columbia that conferred the highest number of associate’s degrees for the 2003-2004 academic year. The College remains in the top two percent of institutions granting associate’s degrees to Hispanic students.

Rankings come from analysis of data from the U.S. Department of Education National Center for Educational Statistics by Victor M.H. Borden, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor of Information Management and Institutional Research and an associate professor at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IU-PUI); Pamela C. Brown, an enrollment specialist at IU-PUI; and Amy Garver, a research assistant at the same institution. Rankings are listed in their report “Top 100 Associate Degree Producers: Inside the Numbers.”

• Del Mar ranks number 21 in the “100 Top Associate’s Degrees Conferred to Hispanic Students in All Disciplines.”
• Del Mar ranks number 34 in the “50 Top Associate’s Degrees Conferred in Education.”
• Del Mar ranks number 41 in the “50 Top Associate’s Degrees Conferred in Health Professions and Related Clinical Fields.”

Incidentally, in another listing published in the March 14 issue of The Hispanic Outlook Magazine, Del Mar College ranked No. 10 among the “Top 50 Colleges Awarding the Most Associate’s Degrees to Hispanics” for the 2003-2004 academic year. Additionally, the publication listed Del Mar College at

• No. 17 among the “Top 50 Colleges for Hispanic Enrollment,” and
• No. 7 among the “Top 50 Hispanic Serving Institutions Awarding the Most Associate Degrees to Hispanics.”

The magazine’s rankings also used the latest figures provided by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Educational Statistics. Rankings provided by The Hispanic Outlook Magazine only consider data pertaining specifically to community colleges. Community College Week’s rankings include four-year institutions that also provide associate’s degrees and certificates.

According to latest statistics from the American Association of Community Colleges, the number of public and independent community colleges in the United States totals 1,157. Credit and noncredit enrollment at these institutions averages 11.6 million students each year with 56 percent being Hispanic. More than 490,000 associate degrees and nearly 235,000 two-year certificates are conferred annually across the nation.
