City of San Antonio Featuring 85-year-old DMC Art Alumnas Work Among
Other Artists During Contemporary Art Month Celebration
Le Green Schuberts Eagles to the East: Birds in Flight
on display throughout July
Every July, San Antonio celebrates Contemporary Art Month, a major art event
in the citys downtown area. This year, the citys eastside will showcase
Del Mar College graduate Le Green Schuberts work titled Eagles to
the East: Birds in Flight.
Schuberts display consists of eagles in flight emblazoned on a series
of silkscreen lamp-post banners, billboards and storefront windows. The exhibit
runs for over two miles from St. Pauls Square at East Commerce to New
Braunfels Street and continues north to the IH 35 intersection.
It is always gratifying to see former Del Mar students who remain active
and continue to produce art and exhibit their work, says Kenneth Rosier,
chair of the Colleges Art Department. San Antonios Contemporary
Art Month is a very important event that showcases to a large extent gallery
and artist involvement. Rosier says that he often travels to San Antonio
to view art exhibitions during the citys Contemporary Art Month.
The DMC alumnas canvases and prints celebrate the power of the human spirit,
themes of freedom, imprisonment and escape. Through the use of graphic images
of eagles in different wing spans of flight, Schubert seeks to enliven the inner
city space with thought provoking metaphors, endorse a message of positive change
and encourage economic, social and personal metamorphosis.
Of her experience at Del Mar College, the 85-year old says, Joseph Cain,
former chair of the Colleges Art Department, gave me my first one-person
show as a Del Mar student. The Colleges demand for excellence was a major
contribution to my success.
Schubert is also co-founder and technical director of StoneMetal Press, a nonprofit
artist and printmaking facility that provides artists a place to work on original
hand-pulled prints. StoneMetal Press was the first organization to bring an
international art competition to San Antonio by establishing Hand-Pulled Prints
in 1992.
