DMC Offers Continuing Education Opportunities for Professionals Working with Elderly
Seminar series addresses oral health and variety of preventative measures for an aging society

Many professionals working with the elderly face several challenges. Del Mar College’s Health Care Programs for Continuing Education can help them understand those challenges through educational opportunities available this summer. The program is offering a Summer Institute on Aging Series scheduled every Thursday evening June 9-30 and two weekends in July.

Participants will learn more about biological theories of aging, discuss nutrition and oral health, learn to identify appropriate treatment programs and even learn how to deal with ethical dilemmas that stem from substance abuse among the elderly.

The courses provide continuing education contact hours and professional development for nurses, social workers, corrections personnel, massage therapists, athletic trainers, licensed professional counselors or licensed chemical dependency counselors. Classes do not require formal admission to the College, and participants may attend one or more sessions.

Thursday evening courses scheduled for June 9, 16, 23 and 30 cost $55 for RNSG 2002 “Substance Abuse and the Aging Adult.” Courses meet 6 to 9 p.m. in Room 124 of the Coles Classroom Building on the East Campus.

Each weekend, course selection costs $50 or participants can register for both weekends—Part I and Part II—for only $75. Classes meet Friday evenings 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Room 227 of the Coles Classroom Building. These two sessions include:

• July 8-9: Is Aging Inevitable?
RNSG 1004 - Part I - “Geriatric Update: A Wellness Perspective for Successful Aging”

• July 22-23: Peak Performance for the Older Adult
RNSG 1004/DHYG2000 - Part II - “Geriatric Update: A Wellness Perspective for Successful Aging”

Note: DHYG2000 Part II includes continuing education contact hours for interested dental personnel. Topics include nutrition and dentition in the aging adult, denture challenges, oral health concerns, patient accommodation and referral.

Interested individuals may register by calling 698-1328 and should use the course numbers provided with each series description. For more information about the series, call 698-1472.
