DMC Student Emily Messer Nominated for State Journalism Award Recently
May graduate competing against other budding college journalists for TCCJA’s “Texas Community College Journalist of the Year”

What an honor to have peers and mentors nominate you for an award. For recent Del Mar College journalism graduate Emily Messer, that’s just what members of the institution’s Journalism Program did.

Messer will compete against more than 20 other state community college student journalists for the Texas Community College Journalist of the Year award. Given annually by the Texas Community College Journalism Association (TCCJA), those up for the prestigious award won’t find out who the winner is until this coming October during the TCCJA conference in Amarillo.

“We are very pleased to nominate Emily for this award,” says Dr. Manuel Flores, DMC associate professor of journalism. “She is an excellent journalist who has served in many capacities with our program. She certainly is among the best in Texas, and now she has a chance to show she is the best community college journalism student in the state.” Each year, member colleges may nominate one person for the award.

Messer graduated with an associate’s degree in journalism on May 13. The budding journalist was very active in the College’s Journalism Program for the past two years. A graduate of Ray High School, Messer recently served as editor of the college’s general magazine, The Voyageur, as assistant editor of the weekly student newspaper, The Foghorn, and as community relations director for the DMC Press Club.

Messer has won several statewide and regional awards for her work in writing, photography, layout and design. Most recently, she received the two-year college student scholarship by the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association.
