DMC Journalism Program Recently Hosted Contest for Four CCISD High Schools
Richard King High School swept top honors

Each year, Del Mar College’s Journalism Program and the DMC Press Club host the South Texas High School Journalism Contest. Young writers compete for top honors as advisors inspire them to enter their top work in a variety of newspaper and yearbook categories.

Results from the recent competition include:

• “Advisor of the Year” awarded to Richard King High School’s Bill DeFries, advisor for the student newspaper, The Hoofbeat, and the yearbook, The Coronat.

• “High School Student Journalist of the Year” awarded to Allan Johnson from Mary Carroll High School for earning the most individual awards, including headline writing, feature photo, general column and news analysis.

• “High School Journalism Staff of the Year” awarded to Richard King High School.

• “Yearbook Sweepstakes Award” given to Richard King High School for The Coronat.

• “Newspaper Sweepstakes Award” given to Richard King High School for The Hoofbeat.

Out of the 28 categories judged in the newspaper competition:

• Mary Carroll High School received six First-place awards, six Second-place awards, eight Third-place awards and one Honorable Mention.
• Richard King High School received 18 First-place awards, 13 Second-place awards, four Third-place awards and three Honorable Mentions.
• Roy Miller High School received five First-place awards, 11 Second-place awards, 10 Third-place awards and four Honorable Mentions.
• W. B. Ray High School received four First-place awards; one Second-place award, five Third-place awards and five Honorable Mentions.

Out of the seven categories judged in the yearbook competition:

• Mary Carroll High School received two First-place awards, three Second-place awards and two Third-place awards.
• Richard King High School received three First-place awards, two Second-place awards and two Third-place awards.
• Roy Miller High School received two First-place awards, two Second-place awards and three Third-place awards.

W. B. Ray High School did not compete in the yearbook competition, and no Honorable Mentions were given. Results from the newspaper and yearbook competitions do not include the top honors given to King High School and Allan Johnson from Mary Carroll High School.
