DEL MAR COLLEGE BOARD GIVES KATRINA VICTIMS REDUCED TUITION FOR FALL AND SPRING SEMESTERS

College students impacted by Hurricane Katrina may register for Del Mar College for one-third the cost of normal out-of-state tuition. The Board of Regents held an emergency meeting this morning (Sept. 2) and unanimously voted to open classes to individuals from states impacted by Katrina or to students who were enrolled this fall semester in colleges or universities impacted by the storm.

The Board of Regents waived out-of-district and state charges for these victims. For full-time students taking 12-semester hours, that savings is significant.

Fall 2005
Out-of-state and out-of-district charges: $1,512
In-state and in-district charges: $564

Spring 2006
Out-of-state and out-of-district charges: $2,392
In-state and in-district charges: $748

Regent Bill Chriss commented, “We don’t often have the opportunity to be patriotic, but this Board is serious about helping out our fellow citizens.”

Regent Dr. Haysam Dawod added, “This is a tragedy not for Alabama, Mississippi or Louisiana, but for our nation. We are doing our small part.”

Gabriel Rivas, III, Board President, added, “Offering those students an opportunity to continue their education at Del Mar College is the right thing to do. We offer access to quality education at an affordable cost, even in a time of national disaster.”
