DEL MAR COLLEGE BOARD TO CONSIDER GIVING VICTIMS OF HURRICANE KATRINA TUITION
AND FEE REDUCTIONS
The Del Mar College Board of Regents will hold an emergency meeting tomorrow
(Sept. 2) at 8 a.m. to consider allowing victims of Hurricane Katrina to attend
the Corpus Christi community college without paying out-of-state or out-of-district
charges.
Currently, a student from outside Texas would pay out-of-district and out-of-state
fees in addition to tuition for credit classes. For a 12--semester hour full-time
course load, those costs would typically be $1,512 for the Fall 2005 semester
and $2,392 for the Spring 2006 semester.
The Board of Regents will consider waiving those out-of-district and state charges,
which will reduce costs for 12 semester hours to $564 for the Fall and $748
for the Spring.
Del Mar College is joining with other Texas community colleges to offer assistance
to those individuals from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama whose higher education
progress was interrupted by Hurricane Katrina.
Gabriel Rivas, III, Board President, said, Offering those students an
opportunity to continue their education at Del Mar College is the right thing
to do. We offer access to quality education at an affordable cost, even in a
time of national disaster.
