Three Del Mar College Students Interning This Summer at Zyvex Corporation as Part of Nanotechnology Workforce Development Initiative

In January, Texas Gov. Rick Perry awarded a $500,000 grant to Texas State Technical College- Waco (TSTC) to launch the Nanotechnology Workforce Development Initiative to encourage college students to pursue careers in nanotechnology. Funded through the federal Wagner-Peyser Act and administered by the Texas Workforce Commission, the initiative also includes giving students who attend partner institutions the opportunity to intern with a nanotechnology facility.

Del Mar College is one of those partners.

The partnership also includes Baylor University and the Zyvex Corporation– the industry’s commercialization leader that focuses on supplying tools, products and services that enable adaptable, affordable and molecularly precise manufacturing.

This summer, three Del Mar students are interning with the Zyvex Corporation, which is based in Richardson, Tx. Jacob Hanson, a chemistry and mathematics major, James Mejia, a mathematics and mechanical engineering, and Efrain Ramirez, a chemistry and chemical engineering major, will complete paid internships and work along side top scientists and inventors as part of the initiative.

In simple terms, nanotechnology allows manufacturers to manipulate and improve products at the molecular level. The technology, or nanotechnology, lends itself not only to consumer products but also to areas of aerospace and defense, health care and medical developments, semiconductors and telecommunications.
