U.S. Air Force Southwest Winds Woodwind Quintet Performing on Sept. 9

Free concert and masterclass allows military ensemble to demonstrate exceptional musicianship

The reputation of the United States Air Force Band of the West is undisputable. Additionally, their woodwind ensemble, Southwest Winds, earns the same recognition for members’ musicianship. On Friday, Sept. 9, the ensemble will present a free concert at 1 p.m. at Del Mar College.

The Southwest Winds quintet will perform in Wolfe Recital Hall, located at Ayers and Kosar, on the College’s East Campus. The ensemble will also present a free masterclass for other woodwind instrumentalists following the afternoon performance. For more information, call the DMC Music Office at 698-1214.

Stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, the U.S. Air Force Band of the West is a musical organization with an outstanding record of achievement. Individuals assigned to the band are highly trained professional musicians who have dedicated themselves to serving their country through music.

The Southwest Winds quintet is a component of the Band of the West and specializes in entertainment for intimate audiences. Fashioned after a typical 18th-century orchestral wind section and comprised of five world-class wind instrumentalists, the quintet promotes the concept of using classical chamber ensembles in musical support of the Air Force Mission.
The ensemble utilizes a variety of instrument combinations and presents a vast repertoire, encompassing Renaissance to contemporary music. Southwest Winds provides entertainment for a multitude of musical functions including formal concerts, recitals, luncheons, military ceremonies and music festivals.

The group also supports music education through clinics and masterclasses to elementary through college-aged students and presents performance tours throughout Texas, Arizona, Louisiana and New Mexico. Southwest Winds has performed at various high schools, elementary schools, middle schools and universities as well as provided featured performances at Texas Music Educators Association conventions.
