College’s Spanish Language Institute To Immerse Participants in Cultures and Language of Latin America and Spain July 5-8

From beginners to advanced speakers, four-day program designed to develop Spanish-speaking skills for personal and professional use

Go to the Google search engine and type in “Spanish language institute.” You’ll get hundreds of results for language immersion programs abroad, including Spain, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama and other Latin and South American countries.

But, why travel?

Del Mar College’s Spanish Language Institute provides the same immersion experience without participants ever having to update their passports and pay for travel expenses, in addition to course costs. And, no matter the level of Spanish-speaking skills students hold, the program offers sessions for beginners through advanced speakers.

The College’s four-day passport to learning or enhancing one’s Spanish is July 5-8 with classes running 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Participants can enroll as noncredit, credit or continuing professional education (CPE) students. Cost is $160 for all participants, which includes in-district tuition, fees, materials and labs. The program also offers an optional dinner during the week for an additional fee of $10 per person. Individuals may register through the beginning of the first day of the Institute. For more information about registration procedures, go online to www.delmar.edu/spanish, email spanish@delmar.edu or call the Department of Communications, Languages & Reading, at 698-1534.

In-district credit students can earn one hour toward Conversational Spanish (SPAN 1101/Course ID012700126) for the 2005 Summer Session II.

Currently, non-credit registration is underway. The Spanish Language Institute is listed as FRNL 1091, and course I.D. number is 8108 00114. To register as a noncredit student by phone, call 698-1328.

Educators who complete the Institute will receive continuing education credit for State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) certificate renewal purposes. Individuals enrolling for college credit or non-credit will still receive State Board for Educator Certification hours. Teachers who desire college credit should enroll as credit students and will need to complete enrollment requirements as stipulated by the College Registrar.

DMC’s Spanish Language Institute offers a unique opportunity to participants. From the moment students enter the Institute until the moment they leave, participants will be immersed in Hispanic culture and the Spanish language. Del Mar College faculty and native Spanish speakers from throughout Latin America will provide instruction.

Students from all levels will receive speaking instruction two hours each day. Although the Institute emphasizes conversation rather than grammar, in order for students to determine their proficiency levels before registering, they can take a short, user-friendly placement quiz located online at www.delmar.edu/spanish/quiz.html.

Intermediate and Advanced students will build their conversational skills by interacting in small conversation groups led by native Spanish speakers from Latin America. Beginning students will develop their speaking skills through innovative methods.

Additionally, students can attend a variety of cultural sessions with many topics to choose from. Past DMC Institutes offered topics ranging from Latin American politics, Flamenco and Folklorico dancing and Tejano music to the Indian Roots of Mexican Cooking, Idioms of the Language and Herbal Medicine and Curanderismo.

This summer marks the fifth year the College has offered the Spanish Language Institute.
