FYI: The annual baile (dance) is the main event that the Del Mar College Chapter of the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE) uses to raise funds for student scholarships. This year, TACHE scheduled the event to coincide with Cinco de Mayo celebrations—one day later that is–for Friday, May 6.

Festivities open with a silent auction from 7 to 8 p.m. followed by live dance music until midnight by the local group, Family Style Tejano Band. This year’s event will occur at the Moravian Hall, located at 5601 Kostoryz. The dance is open to the public with tickets available at the door for $15 per person.

Del Mar decided to increase the number of scholarship recipients from three to four by adding an award to a General Education Development (GED) student. The additional scholarship has been made possible by the success of the annual dances. Proceeds from this year’s dance will also allow TACHE to increase the amount of each scholarship from $500 to $600 per semester beginning this fall.

So far, TACHE has awarded $14,650 in scholarship funds overall as a result of the annual bailes.

TACHE is a statewide professional organization committed to the improvement of educational and employment opportunities for Hispanics in higher education. However, the association embraces individuals of all ethnic backgrounds into its membership. The Del Mar College Chapter is one of eight chapters across the state.
